The Global Protocol for Community-scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions is designed to harmonize emissions measurement and greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting process for cities.
The Protocol was released at the UNFCCC Climate Change meetings in Bonn by C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, with input from the World Resources Institute (WRI).
17 May 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Bank and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) have welcomed the launch of the pilot version of the Global Protocol for Community-scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions, designed to harmonize the emissions measurement and greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting process for cities.
The Protocol was released at the UNFCCC Climate Change meeting in Bonn, Germany, by C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, with input from the World Resources Institute (WRI). UNEP, UN-HABITAT and the World Bank supported the development of the Protocol via the Joint Work Programme of the Cities Alliance, and further to consultations with local governments around the world.
The Protocol will be piloted in selected cities to establish a single minimum global standard for community-scale GHG emissions measurement. According to ICLEI, a transparent, consistent and common approach provides cities with a much-needed tool for effective climate action planning and financing. It is hoped that cities across the world will adopt the Protocol as they expand their climate mitigation efforts.
