January 2014: The UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has announced the winners of a short film-making competition called ‘tvebiomovies 2013.’ The competition aims to inspire young and established film-makers to highlight environment issues.

Entries were accepted for the following categories: climate change; seas and oceans; agricultural and forest biodiversity; people and the planet; food waste; sustainable resources initiatives; and a world worth protecting. The competition received 565 film proposals from 75 different countries. Since its inception four years ago, UNEP has supported the competition and this year it sponsored the climate change and food waste categories to reflect its current campaign to reduce food waste.

UNEP-WCMC assisted in the selection of 14 proposals, two from each category, to receive US$ 300 and an opportunity to turn the script into film. The selected proposals, made available on YouTube, were shown by UNEP at the 2013 Warsaw Climate Change Conference. After two months, the video in each category with the most views on YouTube was declared a winner and received a prize of US$ 1,500.
