March 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Ecological Society for Eastern Africa, Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) and others have partnered to organize “African Climate Teach-in Day,” a day devoted to lectures and lessons around the issue of climate change in Africa, to be held in universities and secondary schools across the continent.
The aims of “African Climate Teach-In Day,” which will be held on 3 June 2011, are to: disseminate scientific information on climate change in Africa in a way that will be broadly understood, including elements related to its environmental, social, economic and policy aspects, to schools and universities around the world; raise awareness among secondary and university students on the complexity of matters related to climate change in Africa and the need for personal engagement and action; provide an opportunity to introduce projects and other initiatives being undertaken at the international but also at the regional and local level by schools, universities, government bodies, NGOs and other stakeholders from across the African continent; and discuss the problems, barriers, challenges and potential related to climate change in Africa, both at the local and regional levels.

The “African Climate Teach-In Day,” which is free of charge, is also meant to encourage more networking and information exchange among participants, and catalyze cooperation initiatives and possibly new projects. [African Climate Teach-in Day Website]
