unep-unredd20 August 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) and the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies released a guide to strengthen the integration of REDD+ into university curriculum. The publication is intended to build in-country capacity within UN-REDD partner countries in order to identify and address research gaps.

The guide, titled ‘Forests in a Changing Climate: A Sourcebook for Integrating REDD+ into Academic Programmes’, provides background information on REDD+ issues, presents case studies from around the world, and suggests key questions for discussion. The guide also contains reference material and elaborates tools and methodologies ranging from carbon assessment methods to processes for stakeholder engagement.

Overall, the guide covers 12 topics that introduce the scientific and policy context for REDD+ as a climate change mitigation approach, discuss the REDD+ readiness process including legal regulatory requirements and stakeholder engagement, and provide detailed information on technical aspects of REDD+ such as safeguards, and monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV).

The guide primarily targets university professors and graduate students, but can also be used to build capacity among government officials and members of civil society. [UNEP Press Release] [Publication: Forests in a Changing Climate: A Sourcebook for Integrating REDD+ into Academic Programmes]
