UNEP, UN-HABITAT, World Bank and Cities Alliance Launch K4C at World Urban Forum
story highlights

The Knowledge Centre on Cities and Climate Change (K4C) is an online repository that includes documents from each partner institution, an interactive map on climate change adaptation and mitigation projects in cities throughout the world, and an overview of expert institutions supporting city activities.

4 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the World Bank and Cities Alliance launched the Knowledge Centre on Cities and Climate Change (K4C) at the 6th World Urban Forum in Naples, Italy. K4C is an interactive knowledge platform for sharing best practices and experiences on climate change projects in cities.

This online climate change information repository promotes informed local government decision-making by providing access to a broad range of relevant documents from each partner institution, an interactive map and an overview of expert institutions supporting city activities. The interactive world map allows users to see climate change adaptation and mitigation projects in the world’s cities. City leaders, experts and other stakeholders can share their initiatives and upload documents, contributing to the cooperative, evolving nature of K4C.

The K4C is the product of a joint work programme among UNEP, UN-HABITAT and the World Bank, funded by the Cities Alliance. K4C arose from a need to compile experience and knowledge on climate change and cities in one accessible online portal.

Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, underscored that the K4C initiative can play a role in ensuring that tested solutions are shared among city leaders and key players “to realize the outcomes of Rio+20 and fast forward the Future We Want and indeed need.”

The Sixth World Urban Forum, being held from 1-7 September 2012, focuses on the theme “The Urban Future,” and features six thematic open dialogues, including one on environment, urban mobility and energy. [UNEP Press Release] [K4C Website] [World Urban Forum Website]
