UNEP4 April 2016: The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Special Programme on chemicals and waste is soliciting capacity-building project proposals involving developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

Created by the first session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) in June 2014, the Special Programme aims to support institutional strengthening at the national level for implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions, the Minamata Convention and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).

The call for proposals seeks projects to: identify national institutional capacity, weaknesses, gaps and needs; strengthen institutional capacity to plan, develop, undertake, monitor and coordinate the implementation of policies, strategies and national programmes for the sound management of chemicals and wastes; strengthen institutional capacity to improve progress reporting and performance evaluation capabilities; foster an enabling environment for ratification of the BRS and Minamata Conventions; enable the design and operation of institutional structures dedicated to the promotion of the sound management of chemicals and wastes throughout their life-cycle; and strengthen institutional capacity to promote measures to support all aspects of sound management of chemicals and waste, including nationally identified thematic areas covered by the Conventions and/or SAICM.

Governments should submit applications by 4 July 2016. [Special Programme Call for Proposals]
