UNEP, Russian Federation Partner to Promote Chemicals Regulation

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that it has signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of the Russian Federation, covering among other issues: biodiversity conservation; the environmental aspects of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics; and environmental challenges facing the Arctic.

The agreement commits the partners to cooperation on regulating the use of chemicals, and use and processing of wastes.

UNEP16 April 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that it has signed a bilateral agreement with the Government of the Russian Federation, covering, among other issues: biodiversity conservation; the environmental aspects of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics; and environmental challenges facing the Arctic. The agreement commits the partners to cooperation on regulating the use of chemicals, and use and processing of wastes.

According to UNEP, the agreement also outlines cooperation on: developing the green economy; applying “green standards” of ecologically safe best available technologies; water resources management, including the protection of water bodies, marine and coastal environment from anthropogenic impacts; implementation of the Bali Strategic Plan for Technology Support and Capacity-Building; sustainable production and consumption (SCP); increasing public awareness on environmental protection; and implementing environmental agreements and programmes.
