UNEP-ROAP Convenes Meeting on Combating Environmental Crime in Asia

The 12th Asian Regional Partners Forum on Combating Environmental Crime (ARPEC), convened by the UN Environment Programme Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP-ROAP), featured presentations on: initiatives that help in identifying routes used in trade of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS); ways to classify illegal trade in hazardous waste and on approaches to monitor wildlife crime; and the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime.

UNEP17 February 2012: The 12th Asian Regional Partners Forum on Combating Environmental Crime (ARPEC) was convened by the UN Environment Programme Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP-ROAP). Participants discussed international trade in environmentally-sensitive commodities, including illegal dumping of hazardous waste and illicit trade of natural resources.

The meeting, which convened in Bangkok, Thailand, on 17 February 2012, brought together representatives from various governments, universities, non-government and international organizations. Participants heard a presentation by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), highlighting information about initiatives that help in identifying routes used in trade of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS). The Basel Action Network (BAN), the Wildlife Conservation Society, TRAFFIC and others shared information on ways to classify illegal trade in hazardous waste and on approaches to monitor wildlife crime from source to market. Other presenters included the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which provided an overview of its report on Transnational Organized Crime Threat Assessment (TOCTA), and the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which updated participants on the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC).
