UNEP Report Outlines Contributions to Aichi Biodiversity Targets

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has published a report outlining the actions it has taken in support of implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi targets over the period 2013-2016, including examples drawn from a number of projects and initiatives contributing to one or multiple targets.

Titled ‘Contributions of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) towards Achieving the Strategic Plan of Biodiversity (2011-2020) and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,’ the report provides details on the contribution of more than 100 projects spread across more than 120 countries to achieving the Strategic Plan’s 20 Aichi targets, categorized by target. These include projects supported through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) portfolio; actions delivered through partnerships; support to review national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and implement the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing; support to participate in the Biosafety Clearing-House; use of the ecosystem approach in sectoral planning and processes; enhancement of cooperation and synergies among the biodiversity-related conventions; and ecosystem valuation.
