UNEP19 July 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a discussion paper on incorporating environmental sustainability into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ‘Embedding the Environment in Sustainable Development Goals’ proposes a framework including: a narrative overarching rationale; an integrated approach; six criteria for assessing or proposing goals; and a list of best practices for selecting indicators.

According to the proposed six criteria outlined in the 31-page white paper, potential SDGs should: have strong linkages with development goals; promote decoupling of socioeconomic development from escalating resource use; cover critical issues of environmental sustainability, including irreversible changes to the global environment; take into account current global environmental goals and targets; be scientifically credible and verifiable; and be trackable.
