20 February 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a compendium of Global Environmental Goals (GEGs), aiming to inform governments and relevant stakeholders and promote cooperation in achieving their objectives in a more coherent and harmonized manner. The publication was announced in a UNEP Conference Room Paper (UNEP/GCSS.XII/CRP.2), dated 20 February 2013.

The GEGs are internationally-agreed environmental goals and objectives drawn from existing international treaties and non-legally binding instruments. Regional, legally binding, and non-legally binding are distinguished. The GEGs are organized around the following themes: air pollution and air quality; biodiversity; chemicals and waste; climate change; energy; forests; freshwater; oceans and seas; soil, land use, land degradation and desertification; and environmental governance.

According to UN officials, including UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, of the 90 international goals, significant progress has been made on only four.

UNEP notes that the compilation of GEGs is ongoing, and the content continues to be refined and consolidated.

The Compilation also served as background material for the fifth edition of UNEP’s Global Environmental Outlook report (GEO-5). [GEGs Informea Website] [Statement of UNEP Executive Director] [Statement of UN Secretary-General]
