UNEP Launches South-South Cooperation Network

The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) South-South Cooperation Exchange Mechanism aims to improve access to information, best practices, methodologies, advisory services and training opportunities to enable communities to better manage their natural resources and local environment.

The online database is expected to strengthen partnerships between sustainable development projects in developing countries.

UNEP22 May 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched an online database aimed at strengthening partnerships between sustainable development projects in developing countries. The UNEP South-South Cooperation Exchange Mechanism was launched during the 17th session of the UN High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation, convening in New York, US, from 22-25 May 2012.

According to UNEP, the initiative aims to improve access to information, best practices, methodologies, advisory services and training opportunities to enable communities to better manage their natural resources and local environment. The Mechanism also will provide multimedia updates, a discussion forum and other interactive features. UNEP is inviting governments, NGOs, research centers, civil society, academics and others working on environmental issues in developing countries to submit content to the database, and share their expertise and experiences with peers.

The High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation is a subcommittee of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) convened by the Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) on behalf of the UN Secretary-General. The Committee meets biennially to undertake an intergovernmental review of South-South cooperation within the UN development system.
