unep-gec2 September 2014: UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released a toolkit of three new reports to guide countries in advancing their national green economy transitions, during the first public annual meeting of the Green Economy Coalition (GEC). The Green Economy Toolkit for Policymakers provides countries with practical guidance on formulating and assessing policies, measuring progress and modeling future effects of the transition. The toolkit was produced under the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE).

The annual GEC meeting took place on 1-2 September 2014, in London, UK, and was attended by over 200 participants.

The toolkit includes three reports: a guidance manual for green economy policy assessment, which advises governments on how to set targets, identify policy reform needs, estimate the amount of investment and assess policy impacts; a guidance manual for green economy indicators, outlining how indicators can be used to measure progress towards a more resource-efficient and inclusive economy; and ‘Using models for green economy policymaking,’ on macroeconomic planning for both short and long term, providing countries with a range of modelling tools for formulating and evaluating the impacts of green economy policies.

Sir David King, Representative for Climate Change, UK Foreign Office, told the meeting that governments must take the lead and set a clear pathway for business and finance to follow. “A transition to a green economy is needed to tackle the enormous environmental challenges we face, and to take advantage of new economic opportunities,” he added.
