21 August 2018: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP, or UN Environment) has launched the Center for Climate Action Transparency, which aims to help countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) disclose efforts to realize their climate commitments.

The announcement was made during Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week, which convened from 20-23 August in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Center, which works with the technical support of the UNEP Partnership with the Technical University of Denmark (UNEP-DTU Partnership) and constitutes a community of practice of the initiative REGATTA, supported by the Government of Spain, aims to promote a regional vision to comply with the enhanced transparency framework for action and support embodied in Article 13 of the Paris Agreement on climate change, and help countries assess their progress using a common language. The framework was established to build mutual trust and confidence among Parties and to promote effective implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The Center is part of UNEP’s global strategy to help implement the Paris Agreement.

The Center’s website will help inform the public and stakeholders regarding progress on climate commitments of countries in the LAC region. The Center is part of UNEP’s global strategy to help implement the Paris Agreement, including through technical support and a community of practice that promotes knowledge sharing for low-carbon and climate-resilient development.

With the Center’s support, Chile is developing a centralized national climate information platform, Costa Rica is working on a strategic climate planning unit, and Argentina will build a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory system. These three countries are the first to develop transparency plans through the UNEP initiative.
