IETCJune 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) has released the third edition of its newsletter. The June 2013 issue includes articles on: IETC’s new mandate; collaborative efforts with the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) on national waste management strategy guidelines; and IETC’s work in Latin America and Asia.

UNEP Governing Council Decision 27/12 on chemicals and waste recognized IETC’s enhanced role as the focal point for UNEP’s work on waste management. In response to the decision, IETC notes, it has broadened its efforts to promote policies for resource efficiency and environmentally sound waste management.

On IETC’s collaboration with UNITAR, the newsletter notes that in response to the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), which calls for the development and enforcement of comprehensive national and local waste management policies, strategies, laws and regulations, IETC and UNITAR are developing national waste management strategy guidelines to facilitate holistic and overarching approaches to national waste management planning.

The newsletter also spotlights: IETC’s activities in Latin America to providing guidance and support in converting waste agricultural biomass into energy, and integrated solid waste management; and IETC workshops and training sessions in India, the Republic of Korea and Thailand.
