UNEP Hosts South American Workshop on Ratification, Early Implementation of Minamata Convention

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), with support from the Government of Brazil, hosted a workshop on the ratification and early implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Attended by delegates from 10 South American countries, the workshop was held in Brasília, Brazil, from 2-4 September 2014.

Attended by delegates from 10 South American countries, the workshop was held in Brasília, Brazil, from 2-4 September 2014.

The workshop aimed to increase participants’ knowledge of the Convention, including the processes for ratification and early implementation, as well as sources of financial support during the interim period. Countries developed draft national roadmaps for the ratification of the Convention.

Countries represented at the workshop included: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. [Mercury Convention Website][IISD RS coverage of Mercury Convention negotiations]
