unep-gpa20 August 2014: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released information on the work of the Global Wastewater Initiative in Georgia to reduce pollution in the Black Sea. The Global Wastewater Initiative is an international multistakeholder partnership under the aegis of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA).

The project promotes information sharing and exchange of best practices for wastewater management in two Georgian villages on the Khobi River, a tributary of the Black Sea. The project aims to demonstrate the benefits of awareness-raising to address challenges, including pollution from: insufficiently treated sewage; eutrophication; infiltration of animal manure; and land erosion.
