UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner reported to the 120th Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) on UNEP activities related to climate change, highlighting, inter alia: the launch of the Global Adaptation Network (GAN) website (GANadapt.org); the development of the Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network online portal; and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants.
26 September 2012: UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner reported to the 120th Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) on UNEP activities related to climate change, among other activities. The update was delivered in New York, US, on 26 September 2012.
According to Steiner, UNEP has initiated several activities in the climate change arena including: the launch of the Global Adaptation Network (GAN) website (GANadapt.org), which provides access to adaptation-related tools, methods and approaches; the development of the Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network online portal, which will aim to facilitate the application of appropriate knowledge to adaptation programmes and projects; and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants, a voluntary partnership aiming to rapidly reduce emissions of black carbon (or soot), methane and some hydrofluorocarbons.
Steiner also drew attention to UNEP’s support to countries in accessing adaptation finance, including the approval of projects in Madagascar, Cambodia, China, Nepal, Mauritania, and the Seychelles. He indicated that UNEP is providing ongoing support to the Gambia, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Nepal, Myanmar, Mozambique, Chad and Afghanistan to access funding from the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF).
Steiner also underscored UNEP’s success in its bid to host the UNFCCC Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), noting that the formal hosting arrangements would be adopted in Doha, Qatar, at the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC. [IISDRS Sources]
