UNEP Announces Update on IPBES Plenary Meetings

The first plenary, which will seek to fully operationalize the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), will take place in Nairobi, Kenya.

On the agenda are: draft principles and procedures governing the work of IPBES, its governance structure, processes for nomination and selection of host institution(s) and host country for the platform, and the work programme.

4 July 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has provided an update on the two plenary meetings to be convened, in cooperation with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) , the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and other organisations, to fully operationalize the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

It has announced that the first plenary, to be held from 3-7 October 2011, will take place in Nairobi, Kenya. At this meeting, government representatives will consider the draft principles and procedures governing the work of IPBES, its governance structure, processes for nomination and selection of host institution(s) and host country for the platform, and initial elements of the work programme.

The second session, to be held early in 2012, will determine modalities and institutional arrangements, and consider the detailed draft work programme of IPBES. [IPBES News]
