50by50: Global Fuel Economy Initiative
4 March 2009: At the Geneva Motor Show, taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5-15 March 2009, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Energy Agency, the International Transport Forum and the FIA Foundation laid out a roadmap, the “50 by 50 Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI),” to halve car emissions by 2050.

In 2009, the GFEI intends to undertake regional assessments, programme launches, four national pilot projects and a fuel economy information sharing campaign. GFEI includes intermediate goals in 2020 and 2030 and aims to ultimately reduce carbon dioxide emissions by two gigatons annually. The report issued to launch the initiative notes that these reductions will have to be met despite the expectation that the car fleet will triple over the same time period.
