5 June 2008: Addressing the
High-Level Conference on World Food Security (3-5 June 2008, Rome, Italy),
UNEP’s Deputy Executive Director Angela Cropper cautioned against a
reductionist model to agricultural production that reduces farming to a simple
process of intensification and ignores the wealth of agricultural biodiversity.

She noted that UNEP is
convinced that “this is not a model that will ultimately serve the interests of
either the developed or developing world.” She acknowledged the need for
investment in farm equipment, creative market mechanisms and fair management of
global trade and markets, but also highlighted the need for investment in
ecosystem and biodiversity conservation and restoration, sustainable farming
techniques and traditional farmers’ experience. [Statement]
