1 March 2010: Environment Ministers at the 11th Special Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which was held from 24-26 February 2010, in Bali, Indonesia, adopted the Nusa Dua Declaration, in which they underscore the vital importance of biodiversity, the urgent need to combat climate change and the advantages gained from advancing towards a ‘green economy.’

The meeting brought together over 1000 participants, representing more than 100 countries, as well as intergovernmental organizations, UN agencies, and major groups and other stakeholders, who addressed emerging policy issues under the theme of “environment in the multilateral system.”

In the Nusa Dua Declaration (UNEP/GCSS.XI/L.6), the Ministers and Heads of Delegation, inter alia: recognize the scientific view, as documented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report, that deep cuts in global emissions are required to hold the increase in global temperature below 2°C; welcome the decision of the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 15) and the fifth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP 5) to extend the mandates of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments under the Kyoto Protocol to continue their work; take note of the Copenhagen Accord; and reaffirm their commitment to the UNFCCC process to work constructively towards a comprehensive agreed outcome within this process at COP 16 by the end of 2010. The Declaration will be transmitted to the UN General Assembly later this year. [UNEP Press Release] [Meeting Website] [IISD Summary of the Meeting]
