UNECE announces the first Workshop on energy efficiency in housing
February 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is organizing a workshop on energy efficiency in housing, from 21-22 April 2009, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The workshop will bring together representatives from governments, the private sector and academia to provide UNECE member States with policy guidance and suggestions on how to increase energy efficiency in the housing sector.

The event is organized on the basis of the recognition that in the UNECE region, existing and new buildings have low thermal efficiency and wasteful heat distribution systems, and that unless this efficiency is improved, increased housing construction will lead to higher electricity consumption and emissions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has found that, in the residential and commercial sectors, projected baseline emissions by 2020 could be cost-effectively reduced by 29%. The workshop will address the financial, institutional and legal barriers to increased energy efficiency in housing, and discuss specific challenges and opportunities for the UNECE region.
