3 August 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have published a study showing that, while the consumption of wood and paper products fell by 11.6% in the UNECE region in 2009, wood used for energy is the only segment of the market that grew due to government policies aimed at promoting renewable energy sources in order to mitigate climate change and improve energy security.
The Forest Products Annual Market Review 2009-2010 shows, inter alia, that: in the EU, wood accounts for over 50% of renewable energy sources; incentives to promote wood energy have intensified competition for wood supplies; and demand for wood began to increase in early 2010, and in combination with the record low harvests, roundwood prices rose.
