The Forestry and Timber Section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a Wood Energy Enquiry for the UNECE region for the reference year 2009, to better understand the role of wood energy within the region and inform decision making on energy and forest use.
26 November 2010: The Forestry and Timber Section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a Wood Energy Enquiry for the UNECE region for the reference year 2009, in order to better understand the role of wood energy within the region by promoting cross-sectoral communication and cooperation between the energy and forestry sectors in the member States.
In light of the fact that existing wood energy statistics data are scattered among different entities and included within statistics on energy from renewables and waste, the enquiry aims to provide specific information on the origin and amount of wood energy used by different stakeholders (households, commercial power and heat generation, forest-based industries and services), with a view to enhancing decision making on socioeconomic welfare by reducing conflicts between energy and material use at an early stage.
The enquiry is the third of its kind and is based on national correspondents acting as focal points to coordinate a complete response for each member State by January 2011. It is developed in collaboration with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the European Commission, in line with international energy and forestry statistics. [UNECE Press Release]
