FAO UNECE24 April 2013: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the forestry department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have completed a survey on wood as a source of renewable energy. The survey concludes that wood accounts for almost 40 per cent of renewable energy in the region.

The survey was the fourth in the Joint Wood Energy Enquiry allowing for an analysis of trends in addition to the assessment of current status. The trends analysis indicates that wood use for fuel has increased by almost 5 per cent a year in the countries for which complete data is available.

With regard to use, the major user of wood for energy is the industrial sector. Major sources include residues from forest-based industries including wood fuels, logging and thinning, and recovered wood from construction, furniture and packing. [UNECE / FAO Press Release]
