© UNECE25 September 2009: Growing wood energy consumption linked to efforts to mitigate climate change is increasing the likelihood of severe competition for wood on traditional forest products markets. There is therefore a need to establish realistic targets for renewable energy sources, balancing traditional wood processing industry needs with growing energy needs, taking into account the sustainable availability of woody biomass in all its various forms, in the short, medium and long term.

These findings were discussed at a workshop on “Current and future woody biomass for energy: Monitoring use and understanding technology,” convened by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) on 15-16 September 2009 in Riga, Latvia. The final recommendations of the workshop focused on improving international and national wood energy information systems. [Workshop website] [Press release]
