9dic_09_0127 December 2009: The “Weekly” bulletin of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for 7-11 December 2009 reported on the international conference “Blue Fuel for Blue Sky,” which convened on 25 November 2009, in Sofia, Bulgaria. During the conference, participants discussed the UNECE “Blue Corridor Project” study focusing on greener fuels for transport.

The Blue Corridor Project study was launched by UNECE in 2003 with a view to establishing European transport infrastructure corridors for vehicles using compressed natural gas in the transboundary transport of goods and international passenger traffic, so as to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the UNECE region. The international conference was organized by the European Business Congress and Overgas Inc., and brought together local authorities, institutions and private gas companies from Europe, Central Asia and the Russian Federation. Participants explored practical steps to develop the theoretic approaches gained under the UNECE project and agreed on the need to raise public awareness on compressed natural gas as an environmentally-sound fuel solution, encouraging UNECE to further strengthen cooperation on this project with other interested partner organizations.
