UNDP11 July 2012: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) country office in Viet Nam and the country’s Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) hosted a review workshop on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in Hanoi, on 11 July 2012, highlighting the Ministry’s prioritization of human resource training, state management reform, and institutions for sustainable growth.

UNDP Country Director Setsuko Yamazaki welcomed the anticipated national adoption of Viet Nam’s own Green Growth Strategy, developed in cooperation with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). GGGI, KOICA, several research institutions, and officials from the Ministries of Planning and Investment, Finance, Construction, and Industry and Trade had met to discuss the Green Growth Strategy in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on 4-5 June 2012. Yamazaki said the Strategy is expected to enable cleaner production, greener consumption, and the growth of renewable energy.

Yamazaki also identified challenges to achieving sustainable development in Viet Nam, including the need to reduce poverty, improve access to clean water and sanitation, and limit the growth of emissions from the use of fossil fuels. She highlighted the UN’s “One Plan 2012-2016” in the country to support the development of people-centered, green and evidence-based socio-economic policies, protection of the environment, efficient use of natural resources, and involvement of stakeholders from the private sector and local communities.

MPI senior official Nguyen Thi Thuy urged the private sector and civil society to work towards sustainable development goals (SDGs), saying that external relations and partnerships would be needed to promote this initiative.
