UNDP29 October 2012: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) held a one-day workshop with mayors and senior officials from ten Asian cities to discuss action on cities, poverty and climate change.

At the event, regional development partners met with city officials from: Dhaka and Chittagong, Bangladesh; Sihanoukville, Cambodia; Makassar, Indonesia; Kathmandu and Biratnagar, Nepal; Sorsogon, Philippines; Negombo and Balangoda, Sri Lanka; and Bangkok, Thailand.

Participants produced cross-sector vulnerability assessments and inclusive urban action plans, and brainstormed strategies for linking local-level climate change strategies to national planning frameworks. Officers from UN-HABITAT also introduced multi-level planning tools to support linkages from city level to national plans and policies.

UNDP highlights climate change as a key issue for cities in the region, noting challenges such as exposure to climate hazards in slum areas, and in maintenance of urban services such as water and electricity. [UNDP Press Release]
