story highlights

The Second Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Progress Report for the Kyrgyz Republic focuses on the impacts of the global financial crisis and climate change, and highlights that climate change will affect food and energy security.

16 May 2011: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic have launched the Second Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Progress Report for the Kyrgyz Republic, which presents an analysis of MDG achievement based on the indicators proposed in the first report, the indicators used in State strategies and programmes, and with special focus on the impacts of the global financial crisis and climate change.

The report indicates that the Kyrgyz Republic has made progress on the MDGs related to eradication of extreme poverty (MDG 1), environmental sustainability (MDG 7) and on global partnership for development (MDG 8). It also notes that the country is near universal access to save drinking water with over 90% of the population having access to potable water.

The report notes that 60% of the population lives in rural areas and is directly dependent on the quality of land and its water resources. Climate change is expected to accentuate some challenges, such as water shortages, desertification and land degradation, increased incidence of extreme weather events, and the destruction of ecosystems. The report further highlights that climate change will affect food and energy security, and will negatively impact key industries.

It describes how climate change will negatively affect the likelihood of achieving each of the MDGs. For instance, the effects of climate change on food production will lead to inadequate nutrition intake by women and children, with clear impacts on maternal and child mortality.
