UNDP11 December 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has published the third volume of its series on development success stories from Eastern Europe and Central Asia on sustainable energy, demonstrating how appropriate policies, capacities and financing foster positive and lasting change.

The report, ‘Empowering Lives, Building Resilience: Development Stories from Europe and Central Asia – Volume Three – Sustainable Energy,’ considers 13 “transformational success” case studies from 12 countries on topics ranging from domestic heating, solar energy, energy efficiency from building retrofitting, wind energy, small hydropower, green municipalities, and efficient appliances.

To qualify as a transformational success, the cases had to illustrate real and sustainable achievements via data and personal accounts. Because the report aims to illustrate lasting sustainable change, each case is chronicled over periods of between five to ten years to capture what institutional attitudinal and behavioral changes led to their successes in the long term. It thereby shows the impact of sustainable energy on economic development, poverty reduction, health, education and the environment.
