May 2010: The second Lagos Climate Change Summit took place from 4-7 May 2010, in Lagos, Nigeria, under the theme “Transboundary effects of climate change: sharing best practices in mitigation and adaptation measures.” The Summit brought together about 1200 stakeholders who heard, inter alia, two presentations from the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
The first presentation focused on the recently defined Country Office Comprehensive Climate Change Strategy. The second addressed the territorial approach to climate change with an emphasis on climate change mitigation, including reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) activities. The territorial approach to climate change aims to: enhance energy access and the creation of new economic activities through the development of clean production and consumption options at the local level; and reduce local vulnerability to climate variations and fluctuations of energy prices.
The Summit ended with the adoption of proposal of over 40 recommendations, contained in the communiqué of the meeting, which emphasizes the role of the private sector in addressing the threats of climate change and the need to strengthen public-private partnerships.
