19 June 2009: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with Olympus Corporation and the Agence France-Presse (AFP), has launched an African-based photo contest titled “Picture This: Caring for the Earth.”

The contest, open to anyone residing in Africa, is accepting single photos or photo essays that picture people as stewards of their natural environment, with special focus on the role of women in environmental protection. At the contest launch, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark stressed that developing countries are expected to be most impacted by climate change and noted that local communities are already witnessing transformation to their livelihoods.
The protection of the environment and the work on climate change mitigation is at the core of UNDP activities on poverty reduction. UNDP indicates that the contest is inspired by the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December this year. Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai is one of the five judges for the photo contest. The deadline for submission is 31 August 2009.
