UNDP19 December 2013: With the goal of ensuring that extractive industries boost social and economic development in Africa, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) has launched the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The hub will provide technical and research expertise to advise government, business and civil society on a range of issues related to mining, as its revenues trigger growth across different sectors and industries. Some challenges facing African mining countries that the hub will address include limited participation by marginalized groups, conflict over land and resources, environmental degradation, and growth with jobs and local benefits.

UNDP support will provide technical and financial assistance and a package of services on managing extractive industries. Early work is focusing on support to Lesotho, Liberia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Tanzania to improve capacity to negotiate and regulate contracts. The Centre is sponsored by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). [UNDP Press Release]
