29 May 2008: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Japan announced, at the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), a US$ 92.1 million programme for climate change adaptation in Africa. The UNDP/Japan adaptation programme is expected to be operational in August 2008.

The programme will support governments in managing climate risks at national and local levels, review current national development strategies to integrate concerns of climate change on the livelihoods of the poor and most vulnerable, and establish a mechanism for the financing of interventions to adapt to the risks of climate variability. The programme will allocate US$11 million to promote UN joint programming and synergies for scaling up national interventions with the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
