The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Africa Adaptation Programme, with funding from the Government of Japan, is assisting 20 African countries in implementing integrated and comprehensive adaptation and resilience plans over a three year period.
25 November 2010: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Africa Adaptation Programme, with funding from the Government of Japan, is assisting 20 African countries in implementing integrated and comprehensive adaptation and resilience plans over a three year period.
The initiative hosted a Peer Evaluation and Planning Meeting from 22-26 November 2010, in Dakar, Senegal. Over 100 people attended the meeting, which showcased initiatives on climate adaptation available to participating countries, and shared experiences and lessons learned. During the meeting, Kenya showcased a visual mapping tool that will enable countries to understand the scope of their existing climate change activities, documents and actors so that they can increase coherence.
UNDP is expected to help countries establish an enabling environment and develop the capacity required to design, finance, implement, and monitor long-term and cost-effective adaptation policies and plans. The initiative also receives support from the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP). Currently, the programme is active in 20 countries across Africa, namely Burkina Faso, Cameron, Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tomé and Principe, Senegal, Tanzania and Tunisia.
