Under-Secretary-General Named Head of SIDS Conference

The Conference aims to identify new and emerging challenges and opportunities for sustainable development of SIDS, particularly through the strengthening of partnerships between SIDS and the international community.

It is also expected to provide an opportunity for the elaboration of SIDS-specific sustainable development issues, as part of the post-2015 development agenda, including the development of the SDGs.

21 November 2012: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has announced the appointment of Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, as Secretary-General for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Conference, which will seek renewed political commitment to address the special needs of SIDS, is scheduled to take place in Apia, Samoa, in 2014.

According to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Wu and DESA will work in close collaboration with the UN High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and SIDS (UN-OHRLLS), Gyan Chandra Acharya, and his office.
