7 October 2008: On the eve of International Day for Disaster
Reduction, during a news conference in New York, US, UN Under-Secretary-General
for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes
underlined the cost-effectiveness of reinforcing hospitals to make them safe
from disasters. He explained that the Day aims to raise awareness of the
inter-connection between disaster reduction and climate change prevention,
mitigation and preparedness.

He recalled that the UN Secretary-General had made
disaster reduction a priority and had recently held a ministerial meeting on
the links between disaster risk reduction and climate change, where agreement
was reached on the need to incorporate disaster-risk reduction into the climate
change agenda. He called for the climate negotiations in December 2008 in
Poznan, Poland, to emphasize risk reduction. [The Press Conference]
