February 2010: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has released a report titled “Trade and Environmental Review 2009/2010: Promoting Poles of Clean Growth to Foster the Transition to a More Sustainable Economy.” The report focuses on the over 140 low-income and least developed countries, which account for less than 10% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions of all developing countries.
The report explores opportunities for low carbon growth, energy efficiency, and renewable energy technologies. It notes that no reduction of emissions from agriculture was included in the Kyoto Protocol or the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). It also describes how market-based instruments can help reduce the impact of emissions from the agricultural sector. [The Report]
