UNCSD Secretary-General Encourages Negotiators Ahead of Final Informal-Informals
story highlights

Sha Zukang appeals to delegations to use the upcoming negotiations, the last gathering before Rio, to reach agreement on 90% of the text of a “focused political document." The document should, inter alia: contain inspiring agreements for future generations on a green economy and on the institutional framework for sustainable development; contain ambitious universal goals, i.e.

SDGs; and contain concrete deliverables in priority areas.

7 May 2012: In the latest post to his blog, Sha Zukang, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), looks toward the third and final round of informal informal negotiations on the Conference outcome document, to be held from from 29 May-2 June 2012.

Sha appeals to delegations to use the upcoming negotiations, the last gathering before Rio, to reach agreement on 90% of the text of a “focused political document.” He writes that the document should: renew political commitment, reaffirm Rio principles and build upon earlier agreements; be action-oriented in spelling out the Future We Want; contain inspiring agreements for future generations on a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication and on the institutional framework for sustainable development (IFSD); contain ambitious universal goals, i.e. sustainable development goals (SDGs); contain concrete deliverables in priority areas; and create or strengthen the institutions needed for the post-Rio+20 period.

The remaining, most difficult 10% of the text should be negotiated in Rio de Janeiro “with the highest political support,” Sha writes. [Blog Post: A focused political document]
