UNCCD Expert Meeting Discusses Land-Degradation Neutral World Target

The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) organized a meeting of experts to consider options for developing national, regional and international targets to address desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD).

UNCCD logo27 June 2013: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) organized a meeting of experts to consider options for developing national, regional and international targets to address desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD).

The meeting took place from 26-27 June 2013, in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, and was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Korea and facilitated by the UNCCD Secretariat. Participants included government representatives, scientists and civil society organizations, and the discussions focused on developing recommendations for how to implement the call in the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) outcome text to strive to achieve a land-degradation neutral world.

Jia Xiaoxia, Director of the National Bureau to Combat Desertification, State Forestry Administration, China, chaired the meeting. The experts discussed goals, targets, indicators and the modalities for implementation. Their deliberations were to be included in a Chair’s summary of the meeting and to be forwarded to the 11th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the UNCCD, which will convene in Namibia from 16-27 September 2013.
