UNCCD Executive Secretary Visits Reforestation Program in Dominican Republic

The Quisqeya Verde Program is part of the Ministry of Environment's "Green Border" initiative to promote ideas and actions on the border zone with Haiti, including reforestation along the border.

August 2011: Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), recently visited the Dominican Republic and its flagship national program called the Quisqeya Verde Program.During his 7-8 July 2011 visit, Gnacadja planted saplings and learned more about the Government’s plans to plant 30 million trees in four years under the project. The Program is part of the Ministry of Environment’s “Green Border” initiative to promote ideas and actions on the border zone with Haiti, including reforestation along the border.

The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation has provided funding to the project, with two-thirds of its contribution dedicated to activities on the Haitian side of the border. Project implementation is carried out by both countries’ ministries of environment and natural resources, as well as the UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
