story highlights

Among the resources featured on the UN system's “Beyond 2015” website are 18 thematic "think pieces" on key post-2015 challenges, such as the inclusion of disaster risk and resilience, employment, governance and social protection issues.

The website also includes an overview of the process and an interactive timeline allowing web users to track relevant activities and events.

July 2012: The UN’s website on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) features a “Beyond 2015” page, which provides several resources related to the development of the post-2015 development agenda. The resources include an interactive timeline of the process to date and expected next steps, a working paper on the value of global goals, and a series of thematic think pieces from the UN System Task Team on preparations for the post-2015 development agenda

The overview outlines initial steps in advancing the development agenda following the MDG’s expiry in 2015, including the September 2010 MDGs Summit, the establishment of the Task Team in September 2011, and the July 2012 appointment, by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, of a High-level Panel of Eminent Persons. It notes that the post-2015 agenda is linked to the outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

An interactive timeline lists previous and upcoming events related to the post-2015 development agenda. By clicking on past events, web users can view additional details, such as descriptions of the events and speech transcripts. Past events include: a UN General Assembly (UNGA) Development Dialogue on “Advancing the UN development agenda beyond 2015,” in June 2011; an event on “Joint Action Towards 2015 and Beyond” at the Berlin Civil Society Centre with Olav Kjørven, Assistant Secretary-General, UN Development Programme (UNDP), in November 2011; an Experts Group Meeting, and briefing for UN delegates, on advancement of the Post-2015 UN Development Agenda, in February 2012; and the start of national consultations, as well as nine thematic events on key post-2015 issues, in May 2012.

Among the written resources featured on the page is: a working paper from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), by Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, on “Should global goal setting continue, and how, in the post-2015 era?”; five background papers; and the UN System Task Team report, “Realizing the Future We Want for All.”

Finally, the webpage contains 18 thematic think pieces produced by the Task Team, covering: countries with special needs; culture; disaster risk and resilience; education and skills; employment; food and nutrition security; governance and development; health; human rights; inequality; science, technology and innovation; macroeconomic stability, inclusive growth and employment; migration and human mobility; peace and security; population dynamics; social protection; building on the MDGs; and sustainable urbanization.
