New World Water Development Report Format Announced, 2014 Edition to Focus on Water and Energy
story highlights

UN-Water has announced that the World Water Development Report will be published in a new annual format, with the first publication due in 2014 on the theme "Water and Energy." Every fifth year a synthesis report will be produced providing key water indicators and a status report on water resources.

1 October 2012: UN-Water has introduced a new “formula” for the World Water Development Report (WWDR), produced by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP). The new version of WWDR will be published yearly and will focus on a different thematic or strategic water issue each year. The first issue, to be published in 2014, will focus on the theme “Water and Energy.”

The new reports will be roughly 100 pages in length. Every fifth year a synthesis report will be produced providing key water indicators and a status report on water resources.

The new format is an output of the Advisory Group on UN-Water Publications, which took into account a stakeholder survey of 1,100 respondents from 150 countries conducted from December 2011 to January 2012. The survey found nearly universal support for continuing publication of the WWDR, but a preference for shorter, more focused and more frequent reports. [UN-Water Press Release]
