November 2018: A toolkit launched by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ (DESA) Statistics Division aims to support national governments in their efforts to monitor and report on progress towards the SDGs. As a “live document,” the toolkit will be continuously updated as new resources become available.

The toolkit offers a centralized hub for governments preparing to present voluntary national reviews at the HLPF.

The handbooks and reports contained within the toolkit offer a centralized hub for policy-makers and UN country teams, as well as governments preparing to present voluntary national reviews (VNRs) at the annual meetings of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

The toolkit organizes resources into four sections:

  • Global policies and guidelines, with information pertaining to SDG monitoring and reporting architectures, and links to relevant global principles and reporting guidelines;
  • Data resources, featuring the global SDG indicators database, baseline reports, and thematic and regional data sources and portals, including those of custodian agencies for the SDG indicators;
  • SDG localization and implementation, which provides links to regional and national frameworks (particularly in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, as of publication), as well as national reporting platforms and guidelines from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and handbooks on VNRs; and
  • Capacity building and coordination, which contains tools to assist national statistical capacity and assess gaps in SDG progress.

The work of the UN Statistics Division is mainstreamed throughout the toolkit, and includes the official indicator framework developed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs), the annual SDGs Report, and the e-handbook on SDG indicators, among other resources.
