1 October 2009: Speaking at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that “if ever there were a time to act in a spirit of renewed multilateralism … it is now.”
He also praised Sweden for using its Presidency of the European Union to spotlight the potentially catastrophic threat posed by climate change.
Ban noted that the levies Sweden imposes on fossil fuel use and a report its climate commission presented to him in May, among other initiatives, have supported his own drive to push leaders to reach an agreement in Copenhagen this December. He also stressed that “private businesses and insurers are eager for the incentives and signals that will unleash investment and innovation.” [The speech][UN Press release]
