Unido7 December 2009: In a message to the 13th session of the General Conference of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna, Austria, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the meeting’s focus on how industry can become a vehicle for green growth.
Noting that the UNIDO session coincides with the climate change conference in Copenhagen, he underlined the “unprecedented momentum for governments to act quickly and decisively.” Ban also stressed the need for the climate change conference to “generate practical results right away while providing a firm foundation for a legally binding climate treaty as early as possible in 2010,” noting that it makes “economic common sense.” He underlined the role of industry in moving towards a low-carbon economy and listed UNIDO’s efforts in highlighting that role. He expressed the hope that the Organization’s recurrent message that “the next industrial revolution should be both green and global, leaving no country behind,” will resonate in both Vienna and Copenhagen.
