On the occasion of the 100-day countdown, Guterres remarked that peace requires standing up for human rights.

The UN also invites people to share ideas on what the right to peace means to them, using the hashtags #peaceday and #standup4humanrights.

13 June 2018: In a message marking the 100-day countdown to the 2018 International Day of Peace, UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated the importance of human rights for lasting peace, and called for redoubling efforts to address the root causes of conflict and advance SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) along with the other SDGs. The 2018 Day will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In its 2001 resolution 55/282 on ‘International Day of Peace,’ the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided that the Day shall be observed every year on 21 September, during which a 24-hour global ceasefire and non-violence should be held.

There is more to achieving peace than laying down weapons.

On 13 June, which marked the 100-day countdown to the 2018 International Day of Peace, Guterres said peace requires standing up for human rights, noting that “there is more to achieving peace than laying down weapons.” He also outlined the need to promote inclusive societies, provide access to justice and build accountable institutions, as called for in SDG 16.

Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) states that “everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.” However, as noted by the UN, the UDHR does not include a separate article on “right to peace.” Therefore, the 2018 International Day of Peace will consider ‘The Right to Peace: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.’

In advance of that day, the UN invites people to share ideas on what the right to peace means to them on social networks, using the hashtags #peaceday and #standup4humanrights.
