The Ocean Advisory Group will be tasked with developing an integrated and results-oriented Action Plan for the Oceans Compact, launched on 12 August 2012, at the Yeosu International Conference.
The Oceans Compact aims to strengthen UN system-wide coherence in delivering on its oceans-related mandates, while promoting the engagement of all stakeholders to address challenges in protecting and restoring the health and productivity of the oceans.
12 August 2012: In order to achieve the objectives of the Oceans Compact, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has proposed the creation of an Ocean Advisory Group. The Group would be made up of high-level policy-makers, scientists and experts, representatives of the private sector and civil society, and Executive Heads of UN system organizations. The Group would facilitate stakeholder dialogue and catalyze support, Ban said.
The Oceans Compact was launched at a side event during the Yeosu International Conference, Republic of Korea, on 12 August 2012, held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening for signature of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Ocean Advisory Group – proposed within the Oceans Compact – will also be tasked with developing an integrated and results-oriented Action Plan for the Oceans Compact. It will advise on strategies for mobilizing the resources needed to implement the Action Plan.
